Pros & Cons – Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor GP-U999SJVLBAA

PROS
-The mounting system now uses a ball-and-socket joint with magnet. This allows you to point the sensor directly at your target area which improves placement flexibility and increases the effective range and sensing speed. You can mount the sensor facing directly down/up or sideways and still point the sensor almost straight ahead. There is about a 170 degree range of motion.
-New model uses a CR2 battery which should be easier to obtain and universally compatible as opposed to the hodgepodge of disc batteries in the older models.

CONS
-The main negative is there is no screw installation option for the mount. The sticky tape attached to a blank outlet cover with no problems but will likely tear off drywall texture upon removal. If you have an adhesive-safe place to mount it, then it works well.
-No plug-in power option like some other 3rd party sensors have. You are stuck with using the battery.

Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor GP-U999SJVLBAA customer review

Fantastic!!! The Magnet is in the Sensor and will hold to drywall screws!

These sensors are nice. They are small, the sensing distance is good, and they also record temperature.

Best part with the “magnetic mount” system is that the magnet is in the sensor…not the base. I was able to mount these by finding a drywall screw that was close enough to the surface. The magnet in the device secures it well to the drywall screw! No tape, no adhesive, no drilling holes…and I can easily move it if I want to!

For all those having issues with disconnects, you probably have a week ZigBee mesh.
– ZigBee is 2.4 GHz, and gets interference from your WiFi, Microwave, etc.
– With battery operated devices, the range is not “as advertised”…especially through walls and such.
– Battery operated devices do not act as mesh repeaters, only devices running off AC do

You wouldn’t expect your WiFi signal to travel 10 million miles, why would you expect ZigBee (or Z-Wave) signals to?

To make things better, get yourself a ZigBee plug-in device (or two) and place it (them) strategically between the hub and the device you are having problems with. The key is to have enough devices to build a strong mesh.

Customer questions on Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor GP-U999SJVLBAA

Can the device turn on the lights if it detects motion?

The SmartThings Motion Sensor, when connected to the SmartThings Hub and controlled through the SmartThings App, can be used to control supported lights connected to the SmartThings Hub as well. You can create a lighting automation with a motion trigger that turns on the lights when motion starts and turns off “X” minutes after motion stops.

Can I set up a time frame for which this sensor works?

Yes, when used with SmartThings you can setup custom times. You can also specify motion detection rules based on system mode such as home, away, and night. i.e. motion detected between certain hours, and only when system is set to Night.

Does this need a hub if used with an Echo Show 2nd gen, which supports Zigbee?

The SmartThings Motion Sensor is designed to work with the SmartThings Hub. We cannot guarantee performance if attempting to use the device with a non-SmartThings hub. Once connected to the SmartThings Hub, the Motion Sensor can be integrated with Alexa by enabling the SmartThings Skill for Alexa within the Alexa app.

Where is the best place to put it?

Literally anywhere you want to. I have several around the house where i want a wider sweep of coverage than a door sensor in case of glass breakage, such as for my glass slider. I have 2 in my basement that activate the switch for the lights so my cameras will get clear pictures should there be an intruder. They are all hooked up to a dome siren, and i get alerts to my phone. If you have a dog or cat, z wave has a model that can be set not to sense animals up to 40 lbs.
