Withings Body Cardio – Premium Wi-Fi body composition smart scale review

        Build

It comes in black and white with a striped design and four weight sensors for accurate readings. The Withings Body Cardio scale is sleek, thin, and sturdy, constructed from a tempered glass top with an aluminum base. The front face is made from high-strength tempered glass with a black body behind. At a glance, the scales look like a purely black square, but the glass plate is slightly patterned.

        Design

The scale measures 12.8 x 12.8 x 0.7 in. It is  it noticeably heavier than other smart scales at 2.6kg.  The power button is on the side of the scale rather than the base. There are no feet underneath; instead, the scale has a type of two-layer design with a flat aluminum base.

        Display

It displays measurements in 0.1kg (0.2lb) increments, which is slightly less accurate than a scale, such as the Withings Body+, that reports to the 0.1lb. A high contrast display screen, which measures 2.4 x 1.6in, makes readings easy to see.

        Charging

Whereas most smart scales use three or four AA batteries, the Body Cardio scale is charged via a micro USB port on the side. Charging progress is displayed on the screen once it’s plugged in. It’s an unusual choice, but one that we appreciate due to the reduction in waste from old batteries.

How does Withings Body Cardio – Premium Wi-Fi body composition smart scale work?

The scales send a low-amplitude electrical current through your body and measure the resistance it encounters to obtain this data. The voltage drop between your right and left feet is used to calculate the impedance, which results in a value for your body’s fat-free mass. Before 2021, the last user-focused update was in early 2019, when the Pulse Wave Velocity feature was enabled. Despite this, in May, Withings released a software update that added an entirely new feature: Vascular Age measurements.

        Health apps

All this data is synced wirelessly to the Withings Health Mate app on your phone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, where it’s visible alongside workout data and step counts gathered by third-party apps like Google Fit, Samsung Health, and Apple Health.

In addition to aggregating all this data, the app also gives you an in-depth explanation of what it all means, and provides helpful suggestions for lifestyle changes you can make to improve your numbers.

How to connect Withings Body Cardio with health apps?

Pairing your with Withings Body Cardio scale with your phone is a simple process using the Health Mate app. You’ll first be prompted to connect the two via Bluetooth, after which you’ll be given the option of connecting the scale to your Wi-Fi network as well.

The scale can track data for up to eight users, making it a good choice for larger households (the Salter Mibody Digital Analyser, by contrast, can only track up to four people). If it’s unable to sync wirelessly straight away (via either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi) it can store up to 16 readings.

How accurate is Withings Body Cardio?

The Body Cardio smart scale uses bioelectric impedance analysis, which is standard with body composition scales. This particular model includes a “patent pending body position detector” and boasts highly-accurate analysis.

It takes five weigh-ins to gather enough data to calculate your pulse wave velocity (you’ll see how many weigh-ins are still to go each time you step on). Your optimal pulse wave velocity depends partly on your age, and the app will show you whether or not your results are optimal for your age group.

If your pulse wave velocity is particularly fast, it’s a sign that your arteries are deteriorating faster than they should, and you may be at risk of hypertension. A slower velocity indicates that your heart and blood vessels are in good health.

When you step on, the scale will immediately recognize you based on your biometric data, and display your name to confirm it. It will then cycle through the data you’ve chosen to see each time you weigh in.

Withings Body Cardio – Premium Wi-Fi body composition smart scale performance review

Once you take the scale out of the box, plug in the included USB to charge it if necessary. Download the Healthmate app and follow the prompts on your screen. The process is completely guided in an easy-to-follow step-by-step format.

With set up, you can choose preferred units for displaying your metrics (pounds, stones, or kilograms, for instance) and how you’d like to see body composition measurements reported, either in percentages or total weight measurements.

Resting heart rates between 60 and 100 are considered healthy, and lower rates in the 50s and 60s can indicate superior fitness and cardiovascular health. When your heart rate trends down after beginning a new healthy lifestyle habit such as exercise, that is a likely indicator that you are on the right track toward improving your health.

        Athlete mode

Athlete mode is vital for anyone who consistently exercises and has a higher lean body mass than the average person. Any body composition reporting will be largely inaccurate without the ability to choose athlete mode, a due to the incorrect algorithm being used.

        Pregnancy mode

Pregnancy and baby mode remove the bio-electric impedance feature to make weighing safe. The baby mode allows users to weigh themselves holding their baby and does the math to report the baby’s weight by subtracting your own after two measurements (with and without baby). You can create a baby profile that stores the baby’s weight and monitors growth over time.

Withings Body Cardio – Premium Wi-Fi body composition smart scale customer review

Great digital scale but it’s specs have changed

I originally purchased this scale for one main feature. The Pulse Wave Velocity feature. When I first received the device that feature was on and working. A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Nokia saying that after further testing that the PWV reading wasn’t reliable so they removed it. While this is disappointing it’s not a game changer for me now that I have used the scale for a while. Overall this is an excellent scale. It’s very accurate and gives a ton of information to the user, including WEATHER! The best part of this is that it just send the info to the app without having to open the app itself. It just works. If you’re looking for a great scale with a ton of cool features and an excellent iOS app then this is a great buy.

Eufy’s Bluetooth scale, which pairs effortlessly with the EufyLife app for iOS and Android, displays your weight almost instantly on-screen. As one of the best smart scales, it nailed the weigh-in. The BodySense scale then syncs that number, along with a host of other metrics, to the app. Those other data points include BMI, what percentage of your body fat is made of water, and how much of your weight is muscle mass, bone mass and body fat mass.

The downside with the Eufy P1 Smart Scale, however, is the lack of pregnancy and athlete modes, which give better readings based on your body composition. If you’re really into sports like weightlifting, the chances are your readings will be slightly off, and this might not be the scale for you.

That said, the Eufy Smart Scale P1 is a solid choice for anyone who does not require athlete mode. It is affordable, very user-friendly, and provides all the basic information you need plus more data in the app.
