Arlo Ultra – 4K UHD wire-free security 2 camera system review

Design

The Arlo Ultra offers a host of first-time features for the Arlo camera line: 4K video with HDR is the most notable, but this camera also features a 180-degree field of view, color night vision, automatic zooming and tracking, and an integrated 100-lumen LED spotlight. There’s also a pair of noise-cancelling microphones and a siren built into the camera. On other Arlo cameras (with the exception of the Arlo Go, which connects to an LTE network and does not require a base station) the siren is built into the base station. Finally, the camera’s mount has been redesigned, and there’s a new magnetic charging cable that enables 24/7 continuous recording.

Video

Unfortunately, the Arlo Ultra 4K can’t actually shoot in 4K. Initially, I was baffled. How can a camera that has 4K in its name only stream in 1080p HD? I checked myself multiple times and tried to upgrade, but the hard truth is that the Arlo 4K can’t actually produce what it says it can. In any case, you’ll need to either pay an extra $1.99 a month to get 4K cloud recording, which seems like a rip-off as it’s in the name of the product.

The Arlo Ultra’s video quality is what makes it stand out from the majority of security cameras currently on the market. Typically, the standard video display of a home security camera is 1080p HD. 4K resolution, on the other hand, can appear twice as clear as 1080p HD.

Despite this, I am happy with the camera’s 1080p HD video display, so full marks for video.

Color night vision

Rather than the grainy, black-and-white footage you get with most infrared night vision cameras, the Arlo Ultra lets you see images as clearly as if it were broad daylight. (Or close enough, anyway.)The Arlo Ultra lets you see images as clearly as if it were broad daylight. (Or close enough, anyway.)

Yet another common feature that the Arlo Ultra takes to another level is night vision. Lots of outdoor security cameras include night vision, but the Arlo Ultra includes color night vision.

Keep in mind that you have to have the Arlo Ultra’s built-in spotlight turned on to have access to the color night vision feature. If you turn off the spotlight, then you’ll get regular ol’ infrared night vision.

Built-in siren and spotlight

We’ve already mentioned the Arlo Ultra’s built-in spotlight, but it bears repeating. This camera basically combines an outdoor security light with a top-notch camera, plus a built-in siren.

Potential intruders will be subjected to the upsetting experience of being lit up with a spotlight, screamed at by a blaring siren, and recorded in ultra-HD video quality. Plus, the Arlo Ultra has two-way audio, so you can join the fray and yell at intruders yourself through the mobile app.

We don’t know about you, but if we were looking for a house to break into, the sight of an Arlo Ultra would make us choose a different yard to sneak across.

Audio Quality

Of course, the Arlo Ultra comes with two-way audio which allows you to talk with whoever you’re recording. I believe every security camera should include two-way audio, as it’s super useful for scaring away intruders. Full marks for audio!

Cloud and local storage options

The Arlo Ultra records to the cloud, but it also offers a local storage option. The Arlo base station has a slot for a microSD card where you can store footage locally, which keeps your footage more secure and thwarts hackers.

The best part is, you can still view locally-stored footage in the Arlo app. But, we’ve gotta say, the cloud recording experience is better.

Arlo Ultra setup and usage – Arlo Ultra – 4K UHD wire-free security 2 camera system

Once you connect the base station to your router with an ethernet cable and switch it on, just follow the prompts on the Arlo companion app to complete the setup. The base station does most of the lifting, automatically finding and connecting to the camera. All you’ll have to do is insert the battery into the camera, and name the camera and base station.

Once the camera is connected, you need to find a location with a good vantage point and a strong wireless signal, and then attach the camera’s mount with the provided hardware. A single screw is all that’s needed to affix the mount to a fence or exterior siding, and the camera attaches magnetically to the mount, so this is a fairly low-labor process as well. If you’re not using the continuous-charging cable, Arlo says you can expect three to six months of battery life per charge.

You can view the camera’s live feed right from the device tab in the Arlo app, or you can enlarge for a full-screen look. You might think 4K HDR is overkill for security footage, but its unparalleled sharpness and clarity can make a world of difference when you need to discern an intruder’s facial features or capture the license plate on a moving vehicle. The camera’s 12X zoom helps even more in this regard.

Arlo Ultra – 4K UHD wire-free security 2 camera system customer review

They’re pretty good

Size: 2 Camera Configuration: Kit Only

I’ve had all kinds of cameras from the cheap Wyze to the expensive nest. I like nests quick app loads up fast but hated that everything whent to the cloud my internet is capped. I like that Wyze was cheap and recorded to a micro sd card and quality wise I couldn’t tell the difference between nest and Wyze except that the app was a bit slow to load live video. Arlo offers what I like from both the other cams it records to sd card or cloud and it’s completely wireless but the price is high and as I look at live video sometimes I question if I’m looking a 4K or even 1080 Wyze is way cheaper but unfortunately they don’t have an out side cam.

I can get two cameras for what I would get only one nest price wise and also have to pay a yearly fee to record footage only way to stop it is to turn the camera off and then you can do live streaming where as Arlo doesn’t record unless you set the system to arm and if unarmed the cameras don’t just shut off you can still live stream when ever. Also the best thing is that they’re are 100 percent wireless unlike nest. If you find Arlo on sale grab them they will not disappoint. Also Arlo has built in spot light at night they turn on when there’s motion to capture great video as with nest I found that at night sometime people seamed like ghosts and couldn’t really tell who it was even though it has night vision.

In the long run Arlo will be cheaper there’s no yearly fee it has the option to record to the base station and more flexible as to where they can go since they don’t need an outlet. An if you purchase a emergency back up battery thingy meggiger your cameras will keep recording when the power goes out since it saves data to base station good luck doing that with nest. I gave it a 4 star and not five because the cameras should of came with at least one outside cable and power supply to have it always plugged in or to charge it with out having to bring it down and take it out of service while the battery charges.

Arlo Pro vs Arlo Ultra: what’s the difference?

Mostly, it all comes down to resolution. The Pro series has always been the more affordable of the two, and therefore makes some compromises in resolution and field-of-view, but otherwise shares most of the same features.

Namely, those features include Arlo’s neat Color Night Mode feature that uses a proprietary algorithm to recreate color details in clothing to help identify possible intruders, and it’s got a high level of weather-resistance to boot.

We’re big fans of both the Arlo Pro 3 and Arlo Ultra, so we have high hopes for their successors. Both cameras are going up for pre-order on Best Buy and Arlo’s website, while the Arlo Ultra 2 will be available on Amazon and Costco.
