Look

Last but not least is the appearance of the Air220. Although looks aren’t everything, it’s an important consideration if you don’t want your living room looking like a random collection of colors and shapes. The Air220 has a charming antique look to it; the peg legs jut out at an angle, and its color scheme won’t clash horribly with most interior designs.

Effective Filtration – Pre-filter, HEPA, Carbon activated

The Air220 uses one of the simplest 3-stage filtration systems we’ve seen in a long while. The first line of defense against airborne pollutants is the front access panel, which traps larger debris from making their way and clogging the next filters. The second filter is an activated carbon filter that serves to get rid of large particles, odor molecules, and VOCs. The last stage is a True HEPA Filter that has an effectiveness of over 99% of trapping microscopic particles measuring down to 0.3 microns in width.

Pre-filter: Bissell air220 has a pre-filter sheet at its primary stage of air filtration. It comes with the HEPA filter, and it is not washable. Pre-filter will trap the larger pollutants like hair and pet fur. You can softly vacuum the pre-filter often to increase the filtration efficiency.

Core HEPA filter: The second stage of the filtration is a HEPA filter as a core filtration for any airborne particles that size as small as 0.3 microns. The HEPA performance will ensure you a 99.97% efficiency when the dirty air passes through it, although the whole room air cleaning depends on the airflow rate and the air circulating through the filter. The HEPA filter needs to be replaced in 6 months. Although, the filter life also depends on the air quality of the room. The air purifier will notify you when the filter needs to be replaced.

Activated Carbon filter: It seems like Bissell is very concern about odor filtrations on their air purifiers. As the first generation Bissell air400 air purifier, the Bissell air220 also uses a honeycomb styled filter filled with activated carbon pellets. This activated carbon substance will help you to reduce different types of odors like smoke odor, pet or baby odor, or from paints.

Like the HEPA filter, the activated carbon filter also has a separate filter life indicator, and it should be replaced every six months.

Room coverage

The first thing to pay attention to when shopping for an air purifier is how large of a space it works optimally in. The Air220’s ideal settings are in rooms as large as 800 square feet, making this the perfect device to place in home offices, dorms, kitchens, and bedrooms.

Coverage, CADR, and ACH: Bissell air220 air purifier is made for small to medium rooms. The CADR for dust is 178 cubic meters per hour or 105 cfm, for smoke is 172 cubic meters per hour or 101 cfm, and for pollen is 160 cubic meters per hour or 94 cfm. Therefore, this will be perfect for a 250 square feet room where you will get 3 air exchange per hour or 150 square feet at 5 air exchange per hour, although the CADR rating is self-tested and not verified by AHAM.

Automatic mode and air quality display

Bissell air 220 uses a VOC sensor instead of a particle sensor, which will detect odors and VOC more effectively than dust or other particles. Thus, it will be a good selection if your primary concern is odors or VOCs removal. It has five levels of manual fan speed. In automatic mode, it adjusts the fan speed based on the sensor reading and shows the real-time air quality status on its LED color bar with three colors: blue orange and red for good, moderate, and poor air quality, respectively.

The Air220’s internal clock knows when it’s time to turn the lights off for the night. As soon as the sun drops, the Air220 will switch from any of its fan speeds to night mode of its own accord. This is a handy feature for sensitive sleepers who can become easily awaked by fan noises.

Sleep without interruption

But even at its highest fan speed, the Air220 isn’t an obnoxiously loud device. The opposite is true – on its highest setting, the Air220 produces a gently 50 decibels of noise, equivalent to common household background noises, that can gently lull its users to deep sleep. So regardless of the time of day, if you leave the fan on between its second and fourth speed setting, you’ll hardly notice a thing.

Noise Level: The noise level is 34 – 51 dBA, which looks good. But at the lower fan speed, the air cleaning efficiency will reduce.

Soft-touch dial

It’s important to note that the Air220 is not equipped with very many convenience-adding features. For instance, the Air220 lacks Wi-Fi connectivity and a smart air sensor, so using this air purifier requires a bit of manual labor. Selecting between the five fan speeds is done by simply turning the soft-touch dial. Pressing the dial turns the unit on and off, and this is also how you reset its filter functions.

Cord storage

On the back of the unit, you can find the cord wrap where the power cord can be stored off the ground and out of harm’s way. The wrap helps in pulling off a cordless vibe if you’re into that sort of thing.

Easy flow of clean air

Unlike many air purifiers you’ll find on the market, the Air220 uses a shutter-free or louver-free outlet to release clean air into a room. Bissell intentionally uses a louver-free design to prevent debris and random objects from falling into the outlet and preventing even distribution of air. This minor detail has changed the way we think out air outlets now. In addition to lacking any shutters, the outlet faces upward, shooting clean toward the ceiling where it can gently fall across wide areas.

Top-facing outlet

One minor detail that many people tend to overlook is the positioning of the outlet. The outlet blasts cleaned air into a room, so it needs to be as unobstructed as possible. If the outlet is located at the back, the air purifier cannot stand against a wall. The Air220 outlet, however, is different as it faces upward. This design allows you to place the Air220 up against a wall without worrying about blocking the outlet.
