CHUWI HeroBox Windows 10 mini PC computer review

Design & look

For starters CHUWI HeroBox is a really compact MiniPC with 37,3 x 187,6 x 138,3mm and 0.59kg of weight. The design would indicate a gaming platform, but that’s certainly not the case. But the little metal box at least looks nice.

Storage

The remaining features are also surprisingly good for a thin client this cheap. The machine features space for an additional SSD, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac WiFi, four USB ports and a type-C connector, VGA, HDMI, a VESA mount and even a microSD card slot.

Ports

Alternatively, it also supports microSD cards that can hold up to 128GB of your content. It also has 4 USB type A ports, 2 of which are 3.0 and 2 2.0. There are also HDMI 2.0 (which supports up to 4K video at 60fps), VGA and Ethernet ports – as well as 1 USB type C port. It is available on Amazon from now and costs US$199.

Processor

It is a far superior version of its cousin, the Gbox, with a quad-core Intel Celeron N4100 CPU – one of the faster entry-level processors right now, performing about as well as a Core i5-5200U (according to Passmark’s benchmarking site).

Note, the unit ships for free to the US, UK, Australia and dozens of other territories worldwide. The price of the system and value of the coupon is determined at the time of checkout.

Great little mini-pc for any office work, web/browsing or video/youtube/streaming

(I am not a “gamer” – I understand this machine doesn’t have anywhere near the performance for the so-called serious gamer — or video editing, etc, etc. But for most of the rest of us…)

It’s a great little quiet (no fan!) package, that comes with a bracket to mount behind your TV or desktop monitor…

I was skeptical about the N4100 Celeron — Celeron traditionally being Intel’s lower performing “budget/entry” level line of CPUs — but really, it seems the N4100 Celeron wih the provided 8GB DRAM and 180GB SSD is plenty fast enough — easily replaces my old laptop I was using as my desktop system.

This herobox has an easy to reach empty 2.5inch SATA drive bay – just remove the six screws on the back (one is covered by a sticker) and pop in any standard SATA/SSD (or HD) … To mount permanently I recommend using the mounting screws – 4 holding the rails to the case and 4 provided in a little bag to hold the drive to the rail.

I popped in a 500GB SSD that boots into XUbuntu Linux – runs great – and with some fiddling can (dual) boot into the provided “Home” Windows 10 software if I need/want to run an app that I can’t find for Linux (tax software I had to use last week ;-( ) Linux allows one to mount the Windows “C” partition and access that …

Plus plenty enough ports, but if you need more, just get a USB hub.

(A video review I saw also showed you can replace the included 180GB SSD, but that requires removing the mother board — I didn’t want to do that.)
