CHUWI Lapbook Pro 14.1 inch windows laptop 8GB 256GB review

Build

Chuwi has opted for a dark silver metal case that has a matte finish. OEMs usually equip their devices with plastic cases at this price point, which is why the LapBook Pro scores well here. The LapBook Pro has a minimalist look to it too, which may evoke associations with Apple laptops. The device also has slim display bezels, which add to the premium look of the device.

Design

The Chuwi Lapbook Pro is a very thin laptop that can be easily transported on the go or at work. The weight of the device is 1475 grams. The dimensions of the laptop are compact – 324.2 x 209 x 13.4 mm.  The display still bounces about slightly when typing, but not overly so. However, we can deform the display slightly if we press on the display lid, which is not ideal. Incidentally, we were able to open the display to 130°, and even with one finger, although with some finger acrobatics involved. Small magnets hold the display in place when the lid is closed.

Ports

Chuwi has included one USB 3.2 Type-A port and one USB 3.2 Type-C port, along with a micro HDMI port and a headphone jack. The Type-C port serves not only to transfer data and connect peripherals but also to power the device. Sadly, the LapBook Pro lacks a memory card reader of any sort, so you will need an adapter or dongle if you want to connect a microSD or SD card. The ports are well positioned though and should not obstruct a wired or wireless mouse regardless of which hand you use.

Screen

The quality of the display itself is pleasing. The Chuwi Lapbook Pro features a 14.1-inch Full HD IPS display.

The LapBook Pro has a 14-inch IPS display. The panel has a glossy finish and operates natively at 1920×1080. Our review unit achieved an average maximum brightness of 268 cd/m² according to X-Rite i1Pro 2 with a disappointingly low 77% even backlight distribution. The panel also has a comparatively high black level, which we measured at 0.625 cd/m². This black value gives the panel a grey haze and results in a pitiful 475:1 contrast ratio. In short, the LapBook Pro disappoints here with some of our comparison devices achieving our acceptable threshold of 300 cd/m² average maximum brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio.

CHUWI Lapbook Pro 14.1 inch windows laptop 8GB 256GB performance review

Laptop Chuwi Lapbook Pro equipped with Intel Gemini-Lake N4100 processor. The same processor uses the Lapbook SE and offers relatively good performance than most laptops in this price range.

For everyday tasks, the Chuwi Lapbook Pro behaves in much the same way as the Surface Pro in the cheapest package. Small games, such as Minecraft or older games, can easily run on it. Photoshop photo editor works and simple things can be done and processed. Video editing is possible up to FullHD and shorter videos, but a little tedious. Also run on Youtube in 4K video resolution will not be a problem.

What about memory? The device uses 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of EMMC internal memory. Also on the rear panel you can use the M.2 slot for SSD cards with up to 2 TB of memory. The speed of EMMC memory is not as high as on SSD drives. Below you can see the speed test results.

In the GeekBench 4 test, the Lapbook Pro laptop scored 1746 and 5131 points in the single-core and multi-core test.

In general, it is a pleasant laptop to use, but most likely for simple and uncomplicated everyday tasks.

Software

In the Chuwi Lapbook Pro menu, you can find the Microsoft market and install additional programs or games. This is a very convenient solution and many programs and games are free. The user interface is stable and simple.

Fortunately, the Chuwi Lapbook Pro ships with a clean Windows 10 operating system without third-party programs. Also, the device has English out of the box, but in the settings you can easily change to any other language.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Chuwi equips the LapBook Pro with a chiclet keyboard, the main keys of which measure 15 x 15 mm. The distance between the keys is 3 mm, making them easy to distinguish when touch typing. All the keys have a smooth action while offering medium lift and a clear pressure point.

For typing in everyday life, the keyboard is very good and the typing experience is extremely positive. It is worth noting about the presence of three-level backlight. When you turn on the backlight, the keyboard does not give a lot of light. However, the lighting is sufficient for use at night.
Compared to previous models, such as the CHUWI LapBook SE and CHUWI LapBook Air, the Lapbook Pro has a similar keyboard and works quietly without any noise.

Chuwi has included a 12.8 x 6.4 cm multi-touch trackpad too, which is large enough to perform multi-finger gestures. The trackpad has a smooth finish, on which we found it easy to slide our finger, with the trackpad also responding precisely to inputs even into its corners. There are also two integrated mouse buttons that emit an audible click when pressed and have a tactile pressure point.

Audio

The speakers are located at the bottom of the laptop. At least they sound loud, but the sound quality wants to be better.

If you want to watch TV shows, videos on YouTube and listen to music, of course, the volume will be enough, but not in noisy places. Fortunately, on the right side there is a 3.5 mm audio jack for your headphones. The sound in the headphones is much nicer and better than through the built-in speakers.

Webcam

Chuwi equips the LapBook Pro with a 0.9 MP webcam, which can take pictures and shoot video in up to 1280×720 resolution. Unsurprisingly, the image quality is dreadful, with our test shots looking blurry, pale and lacking in dynamic range.

Battery

The battery life of the Chuwi Lapbook Pro is very good for its price. With everyday use in an average screen brightness and active keyboard backlight, the operating time is just over 8 hours. The battery has a capacity of 37.24Wh or 5000 mAh, which is quite enough.

It is also worth noting about the presence of fast charging 12V and 2A, which will allow the laptop to charge a little less than 2 hours. Charging is via the Type-C connector. But you need to use only a standard power adapter, charging is not carried out directly through Powerbank.

CHUWI Lapbook Pro 14.1 inch windows laptop 8GB 256GB customer review

Excellent little laptop!

Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2020Verified Purchase
I really like this little laptop! It looks very much like a Mac, which I know it is supposed mimic in styling and speed, and I really enjoy the aesthetic and styling of this machine! I don’t like plastic, chunky, thick heavy laptops that look like they’re either something from Dell circa 2001, or some overly plastic looking thing from some other company, and this Chuwi LapBook Pro is very aesthetically pleasing, elegant, and refined in its design and styling. It’s not thick and heavy and bulky either, and it’s hard to tell it’s not a Mac at first glance. This laptop is very sturdy with its casing material, and the screen is bright and beautiful, and easy on the eyes.

This machine is also quick too, and hasn’t bogged down and ‘stuttered’ at all. I use it to play point-and-click games mostly, check emails, listen to youtube and read, and it handles the games very, very well. This machine doesn’t look, nor perform cheaply, regardless of the price tag. This little machine also wakes and starts very, very quickly and ‘flies’! I also find the keyboard to be surprisingly comfortable to type on with a good deep key travel and springiness that’s feels just right, and the keys are stable too and don’t rabble when typing quickly.

The backlight is nice and bright too! My only real gripes are the charging cord doesn’t stay snuggly in the charging port, and I have to constantly re-connect it and try not to it move or myself at all when it is plugged in, as the cord pops out or moves to the side in a way that the cord doesn’t make contact with the battery charging tongue of the laptop itself. Another thing I wish I could do is raise and lower the backlight intensity on the keyboard and set the keyboard to stay illuminated longer than it does after typing.

I was reticent to buy this laptop at first, what with it being a Windows 10 machine and the irritation I have often expletives with Windows machines, however, the RAM and the SSD in this machine really do make all the difference in the world on dealing with Windows this time around after using a 512 GB SSD MacBook and a MacBook Air. If you need a budget machine, or just don’t want to drop over $400 on a machine to use causally, this little laptop is an excellent choice, despite the few issues I’ve mentioned above. I’m including some pictures in the dark to showcase the great screen on this bad boy!!
