iRobot Roomba i7 7150 Wi-Fi robot vacuum cleaner Customer review

Roomba i7+ auto-start only works when phone app connected to WiFi

I was told by iRobot customer support that the smartphone app is what triggers the “start” of a scheduled cleaning, and that if the smartphone is not connected to a WiFi (not cellular) network at the time of the schedule start, the Roomba robot will not start automatically cleaning according to what the user programmed.

I was told this doesn’t have to be the same (ie home) WiFi network, but in fact could be any WiFi network, such as place of work, or public WiFi. While none of this makes sense to me, nor do I view this as a good design, this is what I was told. I am disappointed to find out that one of the best features of Roomba, ie unattended scheduled cleanings, doesn’t work unless the user and his or her smartphone is connect to WiFi at the scheduled time.

This makes the price tag a bit too high for my taste if any of this is true. If this is not true, then iRobot needs to train it’s customer support staff better.

Unreasonable software permissions

During set up of the phone app which is the center of all the smart features. You are required to set up a I-robot account. You next are required to provide your home router password to the phone app (i-robot servers) so that the robot will be allowed to connect. The app also requires the location in the phone to be turned on. giving this permission the app connects with the robot and I can start using it. Removing the permission crashes the app and losses the robot.

I emailed I-robot 3 times and called twice trying to understand what any legitimate purpose of collecting the location information of phone might be. They attempted to tell me it was used to find the robot if it got lost (my house isn’t that big). Hang on–what does knowing where the phone is have to do with finding the robot? After discussing it further, I learn the app has a lost robot feature that you command the robot to play a tone so you can go find it. So that was a lie. Next I was told that the location is needed to know what time zone the robot is in so the scheduling features will work correctly. OK so if travel to the other side of the country or world for work or pleasure the robot will preform its schedule based on were the phone currently is? I am told no, the robot schedule will not change. So that also was a lie.

Bottom line is collecting location information of the phone (me) thru out the day and night 24/7 has nothing to do with the operation of the app or robot. It’s data to use and sell. Guess i’m old school, not willing to pay premium money for the device and be tracked 24/7. never used it and sent it back.

Customer frequently asks on iRobot Roomba i7 7150 Wi-Fi robot vacuum cleaner

Q. How does Roomba®  i7 build its Smart Map and know your rooms?

A. Roomba® i7 builds a map of the area each time it starts a new cleaning job. After cleaning the same space a few times, Roomba® i7 will produce a Smart Map that is pre-segmented into different spaces or rooms. This map can be customized in the iRobot HOME App. You can merge, split and label rooms as you see fit. After that, you can schedule the Roomba® i7 to clean certain rooms at certain times, or have the robot clean an entire level of your home.

Q. How often does the robot’s bin need to be emptied?

A. Emptying frequency varies by household and depends upon factors such as floor surfaces being cleaned and whether or not you have pets. When the robot’s bin is full, you will receive a notification through the iRobot HOME App. Roomba® i7 is also compatible with Clean Base™ Automatic Dirt Disposal (sold separately and as a combo – model name Roomba® i7+). Clean Base™ automatically empties the robot’s bin each time it docks or whenever its bin is full, and is designed to hold 30 robot bins of dirt and debris so you can forget about vacuuming for weeks at a time.

Q. Can the Roomba® i7 remember more than one floor plan?

A. Yes! The Roomba® i7 can remember up to 10 unique floor plans, so you can carry the robot to a different floor or a different home. As long at the robot has mapped the space, it will recognize its location and clean as directed.

Q. Can the Clean Base™ be purchased separately?

A. Yes, the Clean Base™ can be purchased separately for $299.99. When purchased separately, Clean Base™ comes with a specially-designed robot dust bin which allows it to work with the dirt disposal. Just replace your original bin with the new one and you’re ready to go.
