LG 55NANO866NA 55 inch NanoCell 4K Ultra HD Smart TV reviews

With the LG NANO866NA, your favorite movies and series appear colorful and sharp. Because this 4K television has NanoCell technology, you can view images in rich and pure colors. This technology uses minuscule particles on the screen to block unnecessary light waves. That way, you only see the colors that were meant to show up on the screen. The 10-bit panel lets you enjoy an HDR color gamut, so you can clearly see subtle color details in light and dark areas on the screen. Fast action will also look smooth thanks to the 100Hz refresh rate. You can track anything that moves, and sports games and action movies will look realistic. Pros & Cons – LG 55NANO866NA 55 inch NanoCell 4K Ultra HD Smart TV

Pros

1. Great picture quality. colours are vibrant and it offers a wide range of picture settings with the option to customise advanced picture settings so you can get the best picture that is to your taste
2. The magic remote is great, when it works it works well. The dedicated buttons for Amazon Prime, Netlfix etc are awesome. And voice recognition is great as well – able to understand me very well.
3. When watching 4k footage I have notice a stark improvement from my 1080p monitor and 1440p monitor. The picture is clear and details are sharp.
4. I haven’t tried Game Mode with a console. But I would definitely recommend getting a 4k capable one in order to use the resolution that this TV offers.
5. Viewing angles are great, can look from the side and still get great colours and clear picture.
6. WebOS is great – fast and responsive (but requires a strong internet connection)
7. WiFi works great – able to get high quality footage when supported.

Cons

1. Backlight bleed is a common thing with IPS type
2. Magic Remote can be a bit much to start off with. Takes some time getting use to. I haven’t found a shortcut button that takes me back to live TV channels. Might just be me but it would be nice to have one. Otherwise you have to press the home button and find the Live TV icon. Bit tedious when you have dedicated buttons for Netflix and Prime Video.
3. It may just be my keen eye but I have noticed something weird with the motion processing. It is as if the processor is struggling to keep a smooth moving picture – it is hard to explain – but sometimes it looks as if the image is on 2x speed (it is a very subtle speed increase)
4. The blacks are not great. Dark scenes are not as great as on VA panels. The ‘Technicolor for dark room’) are the best options for improving picture quality in my opinion.

LG 55NANO866NA 55 inch NanoCell 4K Ultra HD Smart TV reviews

Design

LG 55NANO866NA has a very good design overall and the color looks good. The build quality isn’t the best out there but isn’t bad either. The frame is quite thin which will make the TV look good if you wall mount it. Also some of the connection ports are on the side so shouldn’t be a problem if you wall mount it. We will give 5/5 points for the LG 55NANO866NA review part of the design.

Sound

LG 55NANO866NA has two built-in speakers with 10W power each. The total output of 20W is usually enough, unless you are standing too far from the TV. If that is the case, you should consider buying external speakers that will turn your room into a home cinema. The ultra-surround mode is good, especially if you buy external speakers. The sound is also clear but that depends on the content quality. We will give 4/5 points for the LG 55NANO866NA review part of the sound.

Key features

Combining LG’s NanoCell technology, Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound, the LG NANO86 provides pure and realistic colours, all within an exceptional 4K UHD display and a sleek crescent stand. Use LG’s award-winning webOS smart platform to stream shows from such apps as Netflix*, and navigate with the intuitive Magic Remote. And you can interact by voice with this Thinq AI TV via the remote, with both the Google Assistant and Alexa built in.

4K Ultra High Definition
This 55” screen has four times the number of pixels than 1080p Full HD TVs, delivering stunning realism, natural motion and incredible detail.

Cinema HDR including Dolby Vision
HDR deepens your view and shows shades previously unseen in home entertainment. Expanding light, dark and every colour in between to extraordinary new levels, this model’s picture gets closer to real life. LG’s 4K Cinema HDR supports multiple HDR formats including Dolby Vision.

NanoCell Display: LG’s advanced LCD technology employs revolutionary nano-engineering. It allows for more vivid and natural colours, giving you outstanding picture quality, even at off-centre angles.

Alpha 7 Gen 3 Processor: the third generation intelligent processor is optimised for a premium picture of exceptional brightness and clarity.

Local Dimming: adjusting zones independently throughout the screen expands the contrast range. It gives brighter whites, darker blacks, and enhances detail in the deepest shadows.

AI Sound and AI Acoustic Tuning: optimises the sound depending on the content, and for the environment in which you’re watching.

Dolby Atmos Sound: immersive Dolby Atmos places sound within three dimensions for an enveloping soundscape, with you at the centre. Coupled with Dolby Vision HDR, it’s a fully cinematic experience.

Filmmaker Mode: displays films in the quality closest to the filmmaker’s intention.

Gaming: LG’s tech including Auto Low Latency mode provides an optimised gaming experience.

Advanced Voice Control & Smart Compatibility
This Thinq AI TV has the Google Assistant and Alexa built in, so you can get answers to questions while you’re watching TV, and control compatible smart home devices. Use LG’s revolutionary Magic Remote for voice command, as well as intuitive point, scroll and gesture control, and easy content search.

webOS Smart Platform
LG’s award-winning webOS platform revolutionises how you experience your entertainment. With quick and easy content discovery and switching, there’s more entertainment available than ever before. You can stream from all the most popular services like Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, and Disney+.* And with Sports Alert you can receive real-time alerts on your favourite sports while watching something else.

Freeview HD
Get a huge variety of channel options with Freeview HD built in. This free-to-air digital service gives access to 15 HD channels (including BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, ITV HD and Channel 4 HD), plus a long list of other channels in standard definition.

This LG TV does not feature the Freeview Play catch-up service. It supports the range of BBC services including BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport, BBC News, BBC Red Button + and BBC Live Restart.

Elegant design
Finished with a crescent stand, its sweeping minimalist lines do not interfere with your viewing and look amazing in any room.

Perfect partners
With TVs getting slimmer and built-in speakers getting smaller, choosing the right sound system is more important than ever. Soundbars enhance your TV’s sound quality and add that extra audio punch to all your movies, games and TV programmes. More affordable and easier to set up than a full size speaker system, they don’t compromise on quality either.

LG 55NANO866NA 55 inch NanoCell 4K Ultra HD Smart TV customer reviews

Great TV but the blacks could be better

Comes well packaged, but with very few accessories. A very smart and easy to use Magic Remote, a mains cable, the TV and stand and that’s it. No additional cables, screws, etc.

I was very disappointed that the TV did not come with the screws for the Vesa mount because it just so happened these were slightly different size to my old TV. The LG needs M6 screws and I didn’t have any in the house. It seems crazy but when your TV arrives it’s really depressing to spend two hours scouring the garage for some appropriate screws and realising you haven’t got any and you will have to wait to tomorrow to get some!

Once up and running the TV takes you through a short but even so laborious setup. I am driving the TV as a monitor from my TV so the setup was largely irrelevant. I was disturbed to see, though, that the TV wanted your location and that included your postcode. Searching in the settings, I also found out that it collected information about you and sent it off who knows where. That got disabled as did adverts. I am not even sure what the adverts are, but I disabled them anyway. I might add that I am not worried about them coming back or any privacy issues because as soon as the setup was done it got disconnected from the internet.

Quality is good. Pictures are sharp and fast. Colour is very good albeit my screen had a bit of bleed in the bottom right of the picture. This is pretty normal for this type of display. It is only really visible when the screen goes black and in a darkened room. During normal TV viewing I never notice it.

To me the picture out of the box lacked a little vividness, but this is probably just I am used to my old TV. It doesn’t matter anyway, since everything is adjustable. Blacks are not as black as you might hope when viewed in a dark room, but in an even moderately light room they are just fine.

Sound is good.

One thing you really need to know about this TV is that it is 4096×2160. That is wider than some older TV’s and content. In particular Windows doesn’t choose that resolution, rather it goes for the older more popular 3840×2160. So i am guessing that some other devices do the same. Displaying the wrong resolution on any TV will degrade the picture. It is possible to tell Windows to use the higher resolution but then 3840×2160 content may be displayed with black bands down the side. The way to avoid this is to set the crop in your media device to 1.90:1. That lops off the top and bottom of the image ( half an inch each ) and displays everything with no black bands. It’s important to realise that unless you do that you either have to have black bands or just accept picture degradation by running the TV at 3840×2160. Whether your media device can do that, well, that’s something you should look at perhaps.

All in all, Amazon are selling this TV at a great price at the moment, and it certainly is well worth the money. I wish, though, they had a few more accessories, such as Vesa screws!!!
