TENDA MW6 NOVA

An excellent mesh network kit for wide coverage on a budget.

SPECIFICATIONS

Connection: AC1200, dual-band

REASONS TO BUY
  • Wide Wi-Fi coverage
  • Very attractive price
  • Alexa support

The white cubes that make up the Tenda MW6 Nova system are undeniably stylish, and they’ll do a great job of getting Wi-Fi coverage all around your home – even if the top speeds don’t quite match the very best that the competition can offer.

Even if the speeds aren’t the maximum that the market can offer, this is still one of the best mesh network kits in the UK: you get a simple to use guest mode (to keep visitors away from your key equipment), straightforward parental controls, and support for Amazon Alexa control.

Netgear Orbi

Netgear Orbi comes with two devices, a mesh router, and a satellite device. It’s one of the toughest competitors of the other giants in the league of best mesh WiFi 2021. They always come with new features, stronger routers, and appealing design which compels us to rank it as one of the best mesh WiFi extenders 2021.

Design

Netgear Orbi mesh WiFi system has a very attractive design, you can place it on the table or window shelf. The box contains a router, satellite, Ethernet cable and DC chargers to power up the satellite and router. Both the 1.96 pounds’ devices are quite identical in shape.

On the back of the router, there is a WAN port (To connect your device to modem), three LAN port (To connect to other internet devices), a sync button (which can be used to sync the device), a USB 2.0 port (for connecting network storage) and also a DC port to power up the device. When we talk about the satellite, it also has the same but instead WAN port, a LAN port is added to it.

The only difference between the router and a satellite is the upper side, which is different in color. Satellite is pure white while the router is blue on the upper side..

Setup and Configuration

Setting up Orbi is quite comfortable even without have an application for it. The Orbi lid on the top has an LED ring under the plastic sheet that shows different colors rings and each color tells us the stability of the connection. This means following those colors you can place the Orbi satellite at a perfect place. The setting couldn’t be easier; all you need to do is connect both the devices with the power source through DC charger.

After connecting the with the power source, press the Sync button on both the devices and magic happens. Both the devices start to connect, which you can observe through the LED lights ring glowing on the top lid of the devices.

While moving the satellite will change the LED colors. If you see a magenta ring that means the connection is weak, the amber color ring tells us the connection is fair while you see a pure blue light, it means the connection is stable now.

The final step is to open a browser on your desktop and login to “orbilogin.com” with the provided information on the lower side of the router. That’s it; now you can enjoy the fast and stable internet through your whole house. The Design, features and super easy to setup makes it to the top list of best mesh WiFi 2021

Performance

Orbi has a powerful processor of a 710-MHz quad-core ARM-based processor with 512 MB random access memory and 4 GB of flash storage. It also has Qualcomm’s IPQ4019 WiFi control chip, which controls the back-haul data channel.

Netgear Orbi mesh router is a 2×2 router that works on two streams of data at the same time. If you see a dedicated backhaul channel, it works 4×4 radio channels. But Netgear Orbi on the other adds up MU-MIMO WiFi technology that helps in connecting several devices at the same time.

Netgear Orbi has been tested with a result of 552 Mbps at 5 feet. Which is quite faster than Google WiFi (19 percent), Linksys Velop (34 percent) and Ubiquiti AmplifiHD (50 percent). As the distance increases, the speed decreases along. Which makes it the best mesh WiFi router at a time.

All this is possible because Orbi broadcasts its signal at three different frequencies. One of them is 2.4 GHz, another is 5 GHz and also another 5 GHz which is locked from access.

If we talk about the sync of the devices if one of the devices is accidentally powered off or unplugged. Sync of the devices to work as usual again is a mess. Sometimes you have to reset both the devices to work in sync again. But as I told setting up isn’t that hard, so a little hard work can get you great WiFi. If you compare it with traditional best WiFi extenders 2021, you will experience a great difference.

If you compare Best Mesh WiFi network system with the conventional router, the difference is day and night. With the Netgear Orbi best mesh WiFi system for gaming, you enjoy the fast internet even in the basements, play online games and stream Netflix without any buffering.

Tenda vs Orbi

I compared Tenda MW3, 3 pcs (AC1200) to Orbi RBK43, 3pcs (AC2200) in a 3 floor house using the following apps to measure signal and speed for a week.
Internet provider: Xfinity (175 mbps)
Wifi signal strength meter app ver 1.3
Speedtest app ver 4.2.3.47088
Samsung Galaxy S8 (data off)
Total spots measured in 3 floors = 13 spots
Below is the average result:

Tenda
Signal strength: 82% (max/min: 99%/63%)
in dBm: -60 (max/min: -70/-44)
Wifi speed: 347 mbps
Internet speed: 64 mbps (max/min: 93/43)

Orbi
Signal strength: 97% (max/min: 99%/63%)
in dBm: -55 (max/min: -69/-39)
Wifi speed: 258 mbps
Internet speed: 109 mbps (max/min: 179/43)

Impression: Tenda has very good wifi connections between satellites and connected devices. But, Orbi excels in real internet speed which is close to the isp speed.

I still use Tenda for my other slow isp connection of less than <50 mbps. Still going strong! I’ll buy again Tenda mesh for these applications

Alternate – Tenda Nova vs Orbi

NETGEAR ORBI WIFI 6

There are cheaper Orbi options (see below), but the Orbi WiFi 6 is the latest and greatest mesh network system from Netgear – with full Wi-Fi 6 compatibility, it’s able to reach blazing fast speeds, and uses a dedicated backhaul channel to make sure the connection between the router and its satellites is always rock solid.

Add in a straightforward setup process, an intuitive and easy to use app, and support for Google Assistant and Alexa voice commands, and you can see why the Netgear Orbi WiFi 6 makes it on to our best mesh network list… you might just have to save up a while to be able to afford it.

It’s certainly on the expensive side, but with a total of 6Gbps of bandwidth available to up to 100 devices, the kit will create a network that it’s very hard to get the better of. Whether you want your Wi-Fi to reach right into the attic, or you need to connect up a slew of new smart home devices, the Orbi WiFi 6 can help.

This one’s simple to set-up and features a main unit that connects to your router along with a second access point, known as a satellite. In our tests, it extended our 350Mbps internet service to include the bottom of a 50-foot garden (the property covers 2,700 square foot overall). The ISP’s standard issue router alone can’t achieve this. In terms of speed, we saw less than a 10% drop in all rooms that were in line with the main unit or the satellite.

However, the speed at the end of the garden and in the one room that wasn’t in line with either unit, was around 30Mbps. While this is still fast, it’s a significant drop. The satellite also doubles as a smart speaker with Alexa built-in. You can ask her to play music through the satellite’s 35-watt speaker, which sounds clear and sharp, although a little lacking in bass in our opinion, answer your burning questions or just turn your guest network on and off. While there are basic parental controls for free, for more robust controls such as being able to stop specific devices accessing the internet, at certain times, you will need to subscribe to a monthly service. You’re billed in dollars. It costs $4.99 (£3.82 at time of writing) per month.
