Build

 The construction of the page is thick card, being about the same as the thickness of two cartes, and hidden inside is an oblong cut hole, cut to allow two photos to sit back to back, and then faced over with thick paper. The page hinge is a double one, having a slip of thick card inserted between fabric layers allowing the page to open and then lie flat.

Design

1860s Album: cover 16.5cm x 12.5cm x 6cm thick with single (or double) gilt brass clasp (usually parts missing now). One photo to a page (15cm x 11.5cm). The first page may be decorated with flowers etc.

Decoration

The first page may be decorated with flowers etc. The pages for the photographs are usually cream with printed thin gold lines and borders and corner designs, the early 1860s photo mounting is cut square at the bottom and curved at the top (8.4cm x 5.1cm) and the later ones (mid 1860s) may alternate with an oval cut mount. A cut slot with drilled ends has been provided below to slip in the photo.

This is a very high-quality album. Fraying at the corners and throughout the exterior of the photo album with rips in the fabric and velvet wearing off.  These are set inside of a beautiful wine burgundy color velvet photo album with metal clasp. On the front of the photo album is a floral design with roses.

Each cabinet card has a different name on it of the family or person in the photographs. Most photographs are taken in Manchester Iowa somewhere from Seattle and other places. Some of the last names are Walter, Boyd, Strauser brothers, Herman birkhol.

EXQUISITE VICTORIAN MID 19TH LEATHER PHOTO ALBUM

Album is 4 1/2″ wide X 2 1/2″ thick X 6″ tall.  Superb antique American photos.  Estate fresh unique and beautiful antique 1860’s family photo album.  Pages of album have long since come loose, missing pearl like ball on back, lady’s face on front looks to have been re-applied. Brass decor on front, brass latches, hinges.  Not pristine by any stretch of the imagination.

Green velvet spine is frayed. Hinges tight. Binding square and sturdy. The metal clasp mechanism is in working order. All edges gilt. 15 thick pages matted for 4″ x 6″ photos.

Vintage Victorian photo album, dating back to the late 1800’s with a lovely gold hard cover casing and embossed frame. Cover boards are lightly worn along edges and corners.

The inner pages are lightly toned and feature illustrations of roses accented with gilt. Some of the photo frames are worn; please keep in mind that this album is nearly 150 years old. The album is empty and ready for your memories.

The album opens up by unlatching the side and flipping the album downward onto a surface. There’s a much larger mirror inside. See the beautiful, green velvet…that’s what the whole album would have looked like 

This album looks as if it may have been a wedding gift for a newly married couple. The front shows a bell with a small mirror (maybe a wedding bell?) and a horse shoe with the words, “Good Luck.”

Close-up of the interior velvet that has been protected from the elements. Old houses used to be very, very dusty inside. Windows were left open for cooling and the roads weren’t always paved. It was a full time job trying to keep the home swept and dusted.

The illustrations in this album are outstanding works of art by K. Crawford. There are 12 of the illustrations surrounding the photo openings.

The album has a lovely leather cover. It is worn, but the softness and patina are wonderful. The spine has damage as shown in the photo. The clasp is missing. The pages in the album have light soil but very few tears. There are 24 pages. It will hold 19 cabinet size photos and 73 Carte-de-Visite (CDV) photographs. The overall size of the album is 11 7/8″ x 9″. This album is unique and quite impressive.

In addition, Each illustration has a line from a poem to illustrate the subject. Poets include Shakespeare, Moore, Wordsworth, Ketas, Byron, Burns, Scott, and others. The album was made by M & Co. There is a tag inside the front cover reading, “The Albemarle Stationery Company Old Bond St. London.
