What is good in Philips HD9220/20 air fryer with rapid air technology?
Adjustable temperature dial
Not all fryers have adjustable temperature control, so it’s a nice feature to have, allowing you to set the cooking temperature to a maximum of 200 degrees. You can experiment with different cooking temperatures and check your food quickly and easily by pulling the cooking basket out.
Rapid Air Technology
Philips have patented their Rapid Air Technology, which means the circulation of hot air means crispy and evenly cooked foods every time, with a fraction of oil needed.
Countdown Timer
There’s a 30 minute timer integrated on this fryer which auto gives an audible alert when zero is reached. The fryer also shuts off automatically when the timer has finished counting down – a nice feature to have to avoid burnt or over-cooked food.
Food divider
There’s a food divider which can be used to separate different food items whilst cooking. This is useful to have so your food doesn’t get mixed up.
Air Filter
Philips have taken the step to include an integrated air filter in this model meaning cooking smells and vapours are kept to a minimum in your kitchen. In our tests, we did notice much less cooking smells with this model compared to the Tefal range.

Design
The design of the Viva Airfryer is surprisingly compact on the worktop; it’s tall and thin rather than wide like rotary health fryers. The Philips HD9220/20 Air Fryer measures a maximum of 37cm from the handle at the front to the plug at the back; it is 26cm from side to side and 31cm tall. The top section is a heating element and fan, while the bottom section is drawer that pulls out to reveal the cooking basket. As a result, there’s no window for keeping an eye on cooking progress. The bottom of the basket is a metal mesh, so air passes straight through it and hits the bottom of the drawer, which is sculpted to circulate air.
Size
Size wise, this Philips HD9220/20 healthier oil free airfryer is smaller than most of the other models such as Tefal we’ve reviewed but with a cooking capacity of 0.8KG, it will be more than capable of cooking for 2-3 people. If you like the look of this fryer, but need more cooking capacity. All cooking is done in the basket that pulls out from the lower part of the front of the unit; it is a basket within a basket. The outer dimensions are 25x23x8cm while the inner basket is 19x19x5cm the substantial handle on the front does not get hot.
Temperature Control
Controls are simple: a dial at the top lets you set temperature (80-200°C) while the timer knob above the handle controls cooking. And on the back there’s an unusual cord storage that’s handy, although it protrudes annoyingly.
Unlike most other low fat fryers, the HD9220/20 has a fully adjustable temperature control, giving you an extra degree of control when cooking. Depending on what you’re cooking, having the ability to raise or lower the cooking temperature is a nice feature to have (Philips HD9220/20 air fryer with rapid air technology reviews).
There’s an integrated countdown timer allowing you to set it for up to 30 minutes duration and there’s also an automatic shut off function and an audible sound.
If you’re new to low fat cooking and need some ideas, you be pleased to know there’s a recipe booklet included which contains 30 recipes to you started. Recipes include brownies, quiches and rice dishes. Yum!
Recipe
It cooks up to 800g of chips, with a tablespoon (18ml) of oil, to produce 3% fat chips. And it cooks them a bit faster than a rotary health fryer: 22 minutes for 800g at 180°C. Interestingly, it comes with recipes to twice “fry” larger wedges, first at 160°C then at 180°C.
The accompanying recipe book makes it clear that the Viva Airfryer is basically a small fan oven: baked potatoes, spring rolls and drumsticks; plus you can cook cakes, crumbles and quiches in an oven dish inside it – good luck finding a small enough oven dish.
Philips HD9220/20 air fryer performance reviews
The Philips’ design is appealing – compact and glossy. And the timer knob is cool in a retro way: it’s an analogue timer but the Viva Airfryer does turn off (and make an old-fashioned “ding”) when you’re out of time.
To prepare chips, you need to first toss them in oil in a bowl. Then pop them into the pre-heated machine. The fan is audible but not noisy enough to get in the way of a conversation or the radio.
The resulting chips were impressive: ready in just 20 minutes and tastier than any of the other health fryers we’ve tested. They were slightly dry, not quite soft and fluffy enough in the middle, but decidedly tastier than an oven chip.
As an experiment we cooked fresh chips made from the same potatoes in the oven with a spoonful of oil, stirring them just once halfway through the cooking time. The Viva Airfryer is the only healthy fryer that made chips that could beat them.
We also tried to cook prawn crackers in it. We weren’t optimistic after disastrous attempts in rotary health fryers, but the Philips at 200°C cooked them quickly and passably – they weren’t as big and fluffy as you’d expect from a deep fat fryer, but they weren’t as greasy either. The only problem was that, with no window to keep an eye on progress, you could hear them getting blown around inside but it was hard to tell whether they were cooked or not.
Cleaning was OK – the wire mesh at the bottom of the cooking basket takes a good brushing because it catches everything, but it’s not as greasy a job as cleaning a deep fat fryer basket.
Philips HD9220/20 air fryer customer reviews
Very good air fryer
This is a very good air fryer. I had been using air fryer for a number of years now and had previously brought them from a popular TV shopping channel which was good but the cleaning was a nightmare but this one the cleaning was simple. I just wipe it with tissue or cloth to get rid of the oil left after use. I got it from recommendation of a work colleague.
I fry all all my chips, make toast, heat up sandwich, cook chicken, pork chops and make pies etc all turn out very quick and less fuss than using the big oven which I have to say I no longer use.
I would recommend this for a single person or old people when you still want to cook but does not want the fuss with all these washing up or cleaning the big oven afterwards.
I found this one a lot better quality than the one I had brought inthetv channel but found the basket a bit difficult to clean. If this can be improved using the same none stick as the pot with holes to let air in when cooking then it will be prefect. I notice there is a frying basket you can buy separately but for the price it is half of this fryer so I had give it a missed.

Customer frequently asked
What else can you cook?
We’re a family of three, me husband and 4 year old. This is what I’ve cooked:
- 3 pieces of salmon fillets, if heavily marinated and drip, I’ll place a pice of foil under each, still cook gorgeous
- Roast potatoe wedges (either home made or bought, depends on how tired I’m feeling)
- 4 year old has had fish at school, so in go waffles (from frozen), done in about 7 mins
- Chicken drumstick to go with waffles, usually takes 30mins on highest temp, falling off bone
- Sausages if I’ve run out of drumsticks, take about 15 mins
- Fishcakes, bean burgers, homemade meat burgers or standard shop ones, fish pieces, fish fingers, all take about 10-15 mins (I pop them in when I get home and they’re ready when I’m done getting changed)
- I dry bread slices to make bread crumbs for batter in this
- I defrost pieces of meat stuck together before marinading and popping them back on a higher heat
- I generally use it through the day – if u can’t be bothered with cleaning just line the base under the basket with some foil and simply remove after cooking – the basket is still a pain to scrub so I tend to soak overnight
How long to cook homemade chips?
For pre-soaked and dried homemade medium size homemade chips, it takes 18 mins at 180 degrees, not including 2 to 3 mins heating up the Air Fryer first. It comes with a booklet with a chart of times plus a separate laminated crib-sheet specifically for chips which details the times and has a visual chip thickness chart.
Can you fry stuff like falafel and samosas in these things?
Yes and they are done perfectly. Though you have to understand this is not a deep fryer. I have never tried falafel but i do fry my samosas regularly and they come up real nice.
Is there a recommended recipe book for this?
There are only a few basic recipes in the instruction booklet, but it does have a handy chart of ingredients and cooking times. Otherwise, you can easily adapt your own tried and tested repertoire if you just think of the Air Fryer as a mini-oven as regards timings and temperatures. Try cooking for slightly less time than a conventional oven so as to check progress when you first do it.
You can cook anything in the basket except things that are quite wet, such as lasagne or something in a sauce unless it’s in a baking dish that fits – use your own or buy the Philips Air Fryer one. Also, don’t try things that would stick to the basket mesh – I bought the Philips Air Fryer grill plate (expensive but greatly extends the repertoire). I saw some e-books on Amazon but, judging from the samples, I didn’t think they added much.
Can it fry springrolls tidy and for how long?
Spring rolls would be no problem at all, if you’re making your own from scratch you could spray them with a low cal spray or if not then use a little oil over the casing to get it nice and crisp, the shop bought ones that you would reheat in the oven would work just fine without any oil or spray- I would turn them (if large) or shake them (if mini) about half way through the cooking process and I would expect them to cook in around 5 minutes, you should be able to cook four spring rolls at a time if the large sort more like 20 of the mini spring rolls or perhaps even more if you layered them but then your cooking time would increase.
