Pros & Cons – Ring Alarm wireless home security system 10-piece kit

Likes:
– installation is very easy, instructions are clear
– tech support is great. I had one issue and they walked me through it right away.
– I use a ChimePro for the doorbell. Works well, announces visitors.
– Alexa integration works fine.
– the indoor door sensors, motion detectors and keypads all work fine.
– the up-front cost may seem high, but the payback vs my old subscription alarm system still seems good, plus I get much more value from the cameras and doorbell.

Dislikes: none that are really important, but here goes
– the range extenders work, but are kind of weak so I get some “weak connection” warnings with indoor devices that are far from the base station. But they work well enough to run the system.
– the outdoor spotlight cam is a little slow to light up at night when motion happens.
– the ring pro doorbell didn’t work with my old wiring. I run it on battery. No big deal.
– I decided to try the path lights + bridge, but it hasn’t arrived yet (some delays) so I can’t review it.

Caveats:
– I had to upgrade my WiFi to a mesh network (I went with Amazon/eero but google nest probably would have been just as good). I needed to do this anyway, since I have a sprawling house with thick walls and the WiFi was weak in some areas. If your WiFi has dead spots, prepare to upgrade it.
– Be sure to read and follow the simple instructions when you install the different devices. If you do things out of order, you might need to do a hard reset of the device before it will work (I did this once, everything went sideways on me, but I figured it out by myself). Not a huge deal, but it’s definitely quicker to do it right the first time.

What are the upgrades in Ring Alarm wireless home security system 10-piece kit?

Here are some things to note about, in terms of the generational differences:
– The Gen 2 control center is much slimmer, quicker responding to security mode changes, and has a much wider range of volume. It also improves on the wired power source. In the previous gen 1 iteration, the control center had issues where the power can easily be dislodged from the hub if it was moved gently. The second gen hub doesn’t suffer from this minor issue.
– Door & Window sensors are much slimmer, provide quicker responding sound feedback, and more practical in design. The change in shape is less intrusive to the decor, and provides easier access to change its internal battery source. Not only this, there is now a small visual feedback LED to help denote the sensors state during setup or while in use.
– The keypad has become more tactile, reduced its size by nearly a third, and respond with sound feedback nearly in sync with the control center now. The sound feedback also no longer produces the jarring internal keypad echoing as noise is played.
– The provides motion sensor has also been improved asthetically, and the redesign has allowed for a less intrusive look to match with Ring’s orb-motion detection in their Cameras. This redesigned look provides a quicker motion detection at a wider range (Not longer range). I briefly tested the differences between the original sensor and the gen two, with both to match each other’s settings in the app. The gen 2 sensors roughly respond a half second faster with a ~10 degree wider field of view. What is good in Ring Alarm wireless home security system 10-piece kit?

Who can use this?

When paired with contact sensors to cover four doors or windows and a motion detector to cover a room, it’s a great fit for 1-2 bedroom homes. This kit comes with a base station to keep your system online, a keypad for in-home control, and a range extender to ensure your Alarm devices have signal.

3 modes security

Place your Ring Alarm in Home mode to disarm your interior sensors, while keeping your exterior sensors armed. Set to Away mode to arm all the sensors in your home to know what happens while you’re out. And Disarm your system to disarm all sensors and freely walk in and out of your home.

Ring Alarm wireless home security system Installation

As for the base station, you can hardwire it to your router or connect to it via Wi-Fi. I opted to hardwire it, in hopes that it would provide a more stable connection, considering the importance of it. There is an AT&T SIM card inside of it as well, which is what the system uses as a backup for when your internet connection goes down. The cost of this SIM card and its service is covered in the monitoring plan. Once the base station is powered on and hooked up to your router, you can add it your account.

Ring app

The Ring app will automatically detect the rest of the items that came pre-packaged with the base station once its initial set up is complete. You’ll need to pull plastic tabs on each piece so that they can power up, and you’ll want to do this one at a time. If you pull all the tabs at the same time, the system tries to connect to multiple devices at once and slows down the setup process.

As you set up each piece, you’re able to give it a name (like Front Door, Office Window, Main Hallway, etc), and then a location of where it is in your home, as well. Within the app, the devices are grouped by type, and the names that you give each piece is displayed to help you know what is what. While setting up the keypad you’ll be asked to create a PIN number that you’ll use to engage and disengage. If you have additional family members, once you share the new equipment with them in the app, you can set PIN numbers for them as well.

Smart Home integrations

  • Works with your Ring System including Ring Video Doorbells and Ring Security Cameras. Now you’ll always know what’s happening inside and around your home.
  • Works with third-party accessories like smart locks and Z-wave devices for even more security.4 Link them together to control your entire system from the Ring App.
  • Works with Alexa so you can control your system and enable additional smart settings – like listening for glass break with Alexa Guard – all with the sound of your voice.

Ring Protect Plus

For the Ring Alarm to function properly, you’ll need to subscribe to Ring’s Protect Plus plan, which is $10 a month or $100 if you prepay for the year. It includes 24/7 professional monitoring, video recording, reviewing, and sharing for unlimited cameras, 10% off purchases made at Ring.com, and an extended warranty on all of your items as long as your subscribed.

Everything you want in a single app in the palm of your hand & awsome glowing RING led
Style: Ring AlarmSize: 8 Piece KitConfiguration: Device Only

I have taken full advantage of the ring 2.0 security system. My home wiring box now glows with an Ominous red glow or a cheerful blue at night. Mounting the base station In This way meant I had to get multiple wireless repeaters. My base station was on the 2nd floor and I had sensors on the first floor entirely. I was still able to push this unit to max operating ranges and I was also able to take advantage of having the base station chirp upstairs “audible to occupants on the 2nd floor” and the keypad chirps near garage door on first floor. This combined to make a very very cool tech savvy setup.

When people visit my front door the big old echo show verbally announces there presence and the visitors can hear the announcement through the door like a PA Announcement (ring doorbell pro) the door lock and ring doorbell Integrate seamlessly into one unified place. This is what I’m after. Unified home Integration and automation with as few apps as possible. The ring app seems to serve general home security and operations well.

Tips to deal with interference/weak sensor signal: if your trying the same way I did and mount ur base station in ur home wiring closet make sure to place the device up high and In the upper right or left corner of your wiring box so you can mount it with Velcro across the “top n side” that touches a wall. If you tuck it in too deep in the wiring closet it makes it harder for the ziggbee signal to get out. I even have this base station sitting next to Phillips hue smart bridge. I did have to change the ziggbee channel on the hue bridge. This also helped with interference.

Take advantage of the base station having battery backup. When plugged in directly to the socket you will get push notifications when power is lost and restored. This is a really nice feature.

My house came with linked smoke/co2 detectors. If one goes off the others do too. This meant I only needed one ring smoke detector co-listener. I placed a flood and freeze sensor behind my washer/dryer.
One ring stickup cam with solar in the backyard. One stickup cam in the garage. One ring doorbell pro. Yes I will add a few more cams.

Yes I went all the way on this setup but it was fun making it all work together. Now my house talks/chirps! And my Wiring closet looks like giant HAL 9000 AI! If your a tech person go with this and get exactly what you want!
