SWINWAY wireless security camera system review

Brilliant product and amazing customer service

OVERALL Great bit of kit; 4 cameras, really good quality, easy to use and playback is as professional as any other system you’ll ever see. I’d fully recommend these and, if on the off chance you encounter any issues, the support team respond within minutes to your email, solving the problem first time (which is incredible in itself).

UNBOXING
Neatly packaged and clear what goes where. I plugged mine in to test in the living room before mounting outside, something I would recommend given you don’t want to be climbing ladders and plugging things in only to find out they don’t work. You will also notice the big difference attaching the antennas gives; if you don’t attach them the signal will be weak even if right next to the box. Attach them, and you’re just fine.

MOUNTING / WIRING
They’re wireless for signal to the HD/box but remember that they need power. The cable that comes from the camera has a connector on it that then connects to the lead that goes to the 3-pin plug. I’ve mounted mine by the soffitt board so have placed 1-gang sockets in the relevant places of the loft, plugged the 3-pin plug into that and then run the cable down through the soffitt board into an IP55 junction box (outside), which houses the connections between 3-pin plug lead and camera lead. The camera itself is secured by 3 bolts and has infinite adjustments using the supplied allen key (you can rotate, tilt and all those sorts of things). You’re best placing the HD as near to the cameras as you can; if you have one camera a long way away then position it nearest the other 3 and you can use extenders on the one furthest away.

SIGNAL
If you have cameras at the front and back of your house and the HD either in the loft or in a bedroom on the 1st floor you’ll be just fine. They do provide an antenna extension, which I used for one that was at the opposite side to the house and where it means the signal is not going through a cavity wall it does make a big difference. I had one camera that is a long, long way away from the HD/box and I ran a 5m extension cable (available through Amazon) to ensure the signal didn’t have to pass through 2x cavity walls. You lose some of the signal strength in extending it but it is a trade off between no signal (as too far away) or a weaker signal (that works OK) through extending it. You can put 2x extenders together (and that works too) but just remember that the signal is being lost over distance so if your final antenna point is still a long way away after extending then it probably won’t work. Cavity walls are basically the nemesis of signal; plasterboard walls are fine and no walls at all it’ll travel ages!

PLAYBACK
You can view all 4 at once, you can setup motion recording only, you can view an individual camera and even individual clips. You can download the clips to USB (just by plugging a USB stick in and clicking ‘backup’) – it literally couldn’t be easier. If you do download clips and want to play them on your computer then you will need to download “PotPlayer” (free to download) as Windows Media Player comes up with an error. This was one of the things I contacted the support team about – less than 10 minutes later they gave me the answer and it worked perfectly. You can also view live and playback footage via the App, which works well.

QUALITY
1080p and you really can see it.

PROBLEM SOLVING
I had an issue where the lens of the camera had condensation on the inside (happened on two cameras) when the sun shone on it. I emailed the support team and they advised that to resolve you unscrew the lens face-plate (2x allen keys….the same ones as those supplied), leave the camera running for a couple of hours and allow the moisture to be burnt off / equalise. Hey presto, worked a treat and both cameras work fine. I appreciate that this perhaps shouldn’t have happened but I assume it is to do with humidity and conditions at the factory vs. where they are mounted. Given how easy it is to fix AND that the support time gave the advice within a couple of minutes of emailing, I don’t even consider it worthy of marking down a star.

If you want CCTV then get this system. Yes there is some wiring involved for the 3-pin plugs (unless you happened to have them in your lift / desired location already), but that is going to be true of any CCTV system and the quality, price, software and support is exceptional.

N.B. A special thanks to Billy & Sunshine at the helpdesk; replying in as much time as it takes to type the answer is nothing short of incredible.
