Jennov wireless security camera system customer review
Very Nice camera, 2 Significant Flaws
Color: WIFI CAMERA PTZ OUTDOOR 5MP
This camera has outstanding night vision. It has a decent picture quality (for a sub $200 camera). The lens quality doesn’t match the sensor quality. Things are just not a clear/crisp as a camera with a better lens. Still, it is adequate for most security purposes and gives a nice picture overall. The zoom range is very useful (anything more than 5x really isn’t needed for most purposes IMO).
Here is the most significant flaw, at least to me. The camera has the ability to add multiple presets that can be called with one button press. HOWEVER, while the camera will go to a preset and zoom IN to preset position #1 it will NOT zoom OUT to preset #1 (yes, only preset 1). I very strongly suspect that this is a firmware bug that would be very easy to fix. It is something that any halfway decent QA process should have caught. You CAN zoom both into and out with any other preset, so you can work around the preset 1 problem by just using presets 2 and above.
The other major flaw is that the software is pretty crude. You can use either the built-in web browser or you can use a client application. Both programs are pretty annoying, but they do get the job basically done. It just isn’t as smooth easy, or pleasant to use as it should be. The client app and (I think) the camera firmware is shared by multiple camera models from different “manufacturers”. So, you will probably see identical or very similar viewing/use experience from multiple vendors with multiple model numbers each. Of course firmware and software can both be upgraded. However, I think that the magnitude of the problem is such that they need to start over from scratch.
You can use third party software with this camera. I use both Blue Iris (for recording to my local PC) and IP Cam Viewer Pro (Apple and Android) for mobile use. The camera supports ONVIF, a standard that facilitates the use of third party software. This is a huge plus for the camera.
BTW, if you do have an always on PC or desktop (probably a Mac too), I strongly recommend using software such as Blue Iris to store your security footage locally. First, you have control of your video. You can store as much or as little as you like. If you really want off site backup storage you can use Dropbox or similar. The only drawback is the (probably $5.00/month ish) electricity bill and the fact that your storage computer may go down.
This camera does support, SD cards and comes with an 64GB SD card already installed for storing video directly into the camera. This is a very useful backup for storing images or videos locally. Personally, I prefer not to rely on it as my primary storage media, but your mileage may vary.
Very reliable, and great customer service.
Color: WIFI CAMERA PTZ OUTDOOR 5MP
First, this is not a paid review.
I have used two of their cameras for some time now. I love the P2P connection. The PTZ camera is a remote installation on a neighbor’s house, which means I don’t have free access to his router at anytime. The P2P connection means I don’t have to fiddle with IP addresses or ports or anything. I installed the camera, did the setup directly from my cell phone (outside his home) and then back at my home, entered the UID and the camera was located, no problem.
The SD video quality is good, but the HD video quality is great. Just for bandwidth efficiency, I keep it on SD until there is something I want to inspect, then switch to HD. Very good picture.
Before I had a good WiFi signal, the customer service was very responsive and helped me troubleshoot the settings. I finally installed a WiFi extender (at neighbor’s house) and that solved the weak signal problem. The camera has worked flawlessly since then.
I use the motion detection to send notices to my email. This works well, and you can set the sensitivity of the detector so you are not overloaded with emails. You can also send to an FTP server but I did not try that. Additionally, it interfaces with a security system and alarm system, but again, I do not have that setup so could not test that.
I like the included SD card which can be set to record on a schedule of choice. Also, I can record to the SD card or to my home computer. The only negative is that the SD card is a bit hard to retrieve–you have to unscrew a cover and it’s easy to drop the two tiny screws–but in an outdoor environment I don’t know how else to do this. You need to have the SD card protected, so the screw cover is probably unavoidable.
In summary, I would definitely buy this camera again.
