Pros & Cons – ViewSonic X10-4K UHD short throw
Pros
- Out of all the projectors I own, the X10 image quality is the best I’ve seen in terms of the 4K resolution, color, and contrast.
- Trendy design with a carry handle is a nice touch. The look is unique unlike any other home theater projectors on the market.
- The sound quality of the Harman Kardon speakers is excellent. It feels like a premium speaker with base rather than a traditional built-in speaker with flat sound. I also like the flexibility of using this as a standalone Bluetooth speaker.
- Alexa voice control is a plus. Setup was not as complicated as some of the earlier smart projectors I’ve tested. Alexa makes it easy to turn it off and on.
- Built-in screencasting is convenient. It works directly with the screen mirroring off my iPhone. Steaming experience is similar to Chromecast.
- Auto keystone and autofocus are nice to have especially when I am moving this projector to different rooms.
Cons
- Limited apps available in the built-in app store. Wish there were more apps available. Some apps require a keyboard to navigate.
- Size could be a bit more compact for portability.
- The auto-shutoff feature could be annoying sometimes. Based on ViewSonic’s claim, it was designed to protect the little ones at home. I would turn it off to avoid interruption to my entertainment but not a deal-breaker.
- The remote control has a large toggle wheel you can spin to navigate the interface. It would have been better if it controlled the volume instead.

How to setup the ViewSonic X10-4K UHD short throw projector?
Step 1 – Place the projector
Simply place it on a table near a white wall or screen and then adjust the angle using the foot at the front (there’s a choice of 115 or 130% offset). You also have the option of rear and ceiling installations, but given the portable nature of this beamer, these seem unlikely.
Since this projector uses a short-throw lens, it can produce a fairly big image from a surprisingly short distance – for example, you can get a 120in picture from just 2.12m away. You can also adjust the eye-protection feature to trigger between 50 and 100cm. The X10-4K is bright enough to use in an environment with ambient light, but for best results the room should be as dark as possible.
Step 2 – Plug & Connect
Turn on the projector and it will focus itself, applying any keystoning if necessary. Once installed, all you need to do is connect to your network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi and plug in any physical sources. For this purpose ViewSonic includes HDMI and USB-C cables in the box, which is welcome. Setting up the Wi-Fi is easy, and so is choosing a source or pairing with a Bluetooth device.
Step 3 – Adjustment (Color & Brightness)
Then all you need to do is select the appropriate Colour (picture) mode: there’s a choice of Brightest, TV, Movie, Gaming and User 1-2. The Movie mode will give you the most accurate starting point, and there are calibration controls for selecting the gamma, correcting the greyscale and tweaking the colours (although a professional calibration seems unlikely on a portable projector).
The majority of the other controls can be left at their default settings – but remember to turn off frame interpolation for movies (although it can be effective with sport). You can also choose between an EOTF setting of low, medium or high for HDR. Depending on the ambient light or the brightness of the HDR images, there’s room for experimentation here.
Step 4 – Audio modes
Finally, you can choose between using the projector’s integrated Harman Kardon sound system or an external one of your own. If you decide on the former, there are two Audio modes: Movie and User. The Movie mode is probably the best choice for most people, although the User option does allow you to adjust different frequencies from 100Hz to 10kHz.
ViewSonic X10-4K UHD short throw customer review
Stylish fun 4K projector
I made the purchase a week ago, after extensive research for a portable 4K lamp free projector.
Spec wise it ticked all the boxes 4K, portable , positioning a short distance to a wall projecting a large image, premium sound quality ( no external soundbar), wireless connectivity.
Using for a week I am not disappointed as it not just acts a projector, but a great system connecting my iPad wirelessly for image and sound.
Very easy to watch content from apps on a larger screen.
Also connected with an Amazon Firestick and watching my shows gives me a lot of options to play with.
My first issue was where to position the projector, as I have an active toddler running around, and yes when he saw the beam found it exciting to explore.
A key safety feature detects movement in front of the beam and shuts off. Was not aware of this feature and it really helps in my circumstance when selecting it in the menu.
Being portable I have used in my living room and bedroom, with options to travel with it if needed.
One of the reason I purchased was to use with the Sky Q Ultra HD box.
I still need to setup for a permanent location, but having fun with using as a mobile solution. Few weeks’ time I’ll look to do this, and have so far tested the image clarity watching 4K channels.
Just to note once connected to the WIFI to update the software version which I did, and auto focus once the static position is found for the projector.
There is no lamps which is a key factor and the specs claim 30,000 hrs. of viewing time which is great.
Overall it’s a very stylish piece of kit, fun to have around the home and gives that flexibility to move around.
Colours, image clarity and sound are amazing and brings a 4K cinema experience to the home.
